Feelings on a Monday

As I bid Monday goodbye, I sigh a deep sigh, and I allow myself to admit the feelings that have eaten at me as the day trudged by.

I feel…

Uninspired when I want to be encouraging.
Impatient when I would rather be showing love.
Overwhelmed by the to-do list I haven’t even had to time to write down.
Lonely when I want to feel loved.
Exhausted yet unable to sleep.
Guilty over things that were never my fault.
Chubby as I reach for more candy.
Frustrated when my body refuses to accomplish what my head wants completed.
Burdened by the hardships I see those I know and love experiencing.
Relieved that I can go to bed, give it all to God, and find true rest in knowing

His mercies are new every morning. How truly great is Your faithfulness, LORD unto me! Only You can wipe out every one of those feelings and refill me with Your joy. You are the giver of my

Meditation Mondays: God is Near

Loneliness rested upon my heart. Yet again, it threatened to take over all of me. “Is there no one, God?”

“Yes, my child, I AM the One.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lies whispered into my ear. “Believe us. Dwell on what we have to say.”
I cry out again, and I hear Him answer, “Believe the Truth. I am always present.”
                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sin creeps in with a promise to stay hidden inside of me.

I shamefully whisper to God this time.

His answer?

“My answer will always be the same, no matter your circumstances. I am near and I know all.

“Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord,
“And not a God afar off?
Can anyone hide himself in secret places,
So I shall not see him?” says the Lord;
“Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.

5 Simple Activities to do with your Toddler or Preschooler

Do you ever forget about the simple things you used to do to entertain yourself as a child? I’m convinced that this world has gotten far too complex. In the quest to always get better, sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the beauty that comes with tried and true activities that have brought joy to children and adults alike for decades.

While I’m all for improving upon things, I’ve learned one incredibly profound thing when it comes to doing activities with my son. He loves the simple things. He isn’t impressed by cute fonts or the latest idea for teaching him to count.

I like cute things, and I’m sure he will too as he gets older, but in the meantime, I need to relax sometimes. So I’m working to find a balance between embracing the old-school ideas and occasionally adding some new flare to them. Here are some of our favorite classic things to do together.

1. Playing with playdough. The possibilities are endless with this ball of squishiness! If you want to make your own, a friend of mine passed along a recipe that is superb. I know she found it on a blog somewhere, but unfortunately I do not know which one. If you know, please let me know so I can give appropriate credit.

Playdough Recipe

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1 tbs. cooking oil
2 tsp. cream of tartar
food coloring if desired

Mix all the dry ingredients.  Add cooking oil, water, and food coloring.  Cook in an electric skillet on low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.  Continue cooking until the dough becomes a large ball.  This process takes no more than 3 minutes.  Empty the dough onto waxed paper and knead until smooth and cool.  Store in a plastic bowl or zip-lock bag.

2. Hide and Seek. All participants have so much fun playing together that they forget more is happening than fun. Kids are learning counting skills and critical thinking skills by coming up with new hiding places as well as memory skills by remembering your tricky hiding spots from last time.

3. Make and fly paper airplanes. There are a million tutorials on YouTube if you need a refresher course.

4. Create an original picture. Put away the printables and agendas for making something specific and get out the crayons, paper, and glue. Help your child make the masterpieces they have stored up in their minds.

5. Cook together. Is it messy? Most of the time. Will you feel a bit stressed? Probably so. But it is so worth it to share those memories with your child. I’m grateful that my mom wasn’t afraid to let me get in there and help in the kitchen as a little girl. Learning to cook was not intimidating to me because it was something I had always done. I try to do the same thing with Dash. We have had egg on our floor and milk poured all over the counter instead of the mixing bowl, but honestly, this only happens rarely. He generally shows incredible self-control, and in the meantime he’s learning skills in following directions, sequencing, and math.

I love and appreciate the millions of creative new ideas out there, and we do incorporate them into our list of things to do. In fact, I’m hoping to share some of our favorites finds from the minds of creative, loving moms out in Internet land sometime soon. But in my quest to spend quality time teaching my child, I pray that I never forget about the simple things. Learning and joy can come without laminating, pinning, or planning.

Meditation Mondays – Truth

What is truth?

It’s such a confounding a question in 2012.

Truth. A solitary word that brings about heated debates, leaves people searching and confused, and is often defined with a vague answer.

But what is it? Aren’t people tired of being lied to? Don’t we just want honesty? While it’s easy to hear the answer, “Truth is whatever you want it to be,” there is still a yearning that won’t stop nagging at the soul who tries to find peace in this answer.

Truth is one thing.

Jesus said,I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

While so much of the world is offended by this answer that I know to be absolute truth, I can find comfort in the fact that while I’m not worthy, I am forgiven and given direct access to God because I have chosen to follow the Way, Truth, and Life.

But do I live each day as if I truly believe the truth?

How do I apply the importance of absolute truth to my everyday challenges and responsibilities?

By focusing on the truth.

There are a lot of appealing lies that vie for my attention. Lies that claim I need to compromise my standards to fit in. Lies that I need to be more tolerant of other views.

There are even more lies that fight to take over my mind. They sound something like, “I cannot be used by God. I am missing out on something. I am not playing a vital role for God’s kingdom.

Indeed I must believe, even embrace, truth on every level.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
~Philippians 4:8

My sister in Christ, will you join me as we enter into this week to purposefully focus on the truth that has set us free? Let’s crush the lies that try to define and confuse us with the name of Jesus, who is without a doubt, Truth.

Five Minute Friday – Delight

I will be linking up today with The Gypsy Mama’s Five Minute Friday. I strongly encourage you to check it out for yourself, read the words of other women’s hearts on today’s topic, and maybe even write about it yourself!

Today’s word is Delight.

Delight yourself also in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart. ~Psalm 37:4

I remember loving that verse as a girl. It was beautiful, full of promise, and it was in my growing repertoire of memorized scripture.

I remember hearing multiple sermons on this verse as I’ve grown up. I’ve heard it explained for what it really means, and as a result I started to love the verse for deeper reasons. God will give me my desires, but He must be the one in charge of my heart.

So I began trying to delight in Him. I worked to forget about my own agenda.

I failed more than once.

But then He came through and helped me see the joy in finding success in this verse’s call. It is not easy to delight in Him when I cling to the world’s pleasures.

I love food. I love entertainment. I love feeling accepted by others.

Yet all of those things are fleeting. And he has been there to pick me up when no one else can pick up the phone. He has been there when I don’t know how we’re going to pay for our groceries. He has been there when I feel his conviction about turning off a show that is far from bringing him glory.

And he shows me delight. Delight in Him. Delight in peace. Delight in having my own fleshly desires change into desires to see His face. To find His kingdom alive in me.

10 Things That Have Been Keeping Me Busy Lately

You may or may not have noticed that I haven’t been keeping up on here as much lately. It’s not because of anything serious or difficult; it’s just one of those times where I’ve sensed God leading me to focus on other things.

I need to clear my head of all of the “how to maintain a blog” and “be a good writer” articles out there and just live my life. The view of social media and blogging is ever-changing, and trying to keep up with it all is overwhelming for, well, everyone I’m pretty sure.

I thought I’d check in with you sweet people who take time to read my words and fill you in a bit on the busyness of the life you don’t get to see all of the time.

1. I’ve been writing. It may not show so much on the blog, but this brain of mine rarely turns off, so I have been getting it all out so I can try to make sense of it. I also have a personal mommy blog to chronicle our family’s life. I never want to forget the beautiful, difficult, or fun memories that we make each day, so sometimes I just focus on posting there. Additionally, I’ve been trying to guest post more. I really enjoy doing that!

2. I’ve been getting a small taste of what it’s like to have two small children. Since January, I have been babysitting a darling 9 month old boy three days a week. He has been a joy to both Dash and me, but he’s also reminded me of how crazy life with an infant can be. You mothers of multiple small children, keep on fighting. I admire you so much for surviving this way of life 24/7.

3. I’ve been getting ready for Valentine’s Day. It may not have been as elaborate as I originally pictured, and I may have altogether nixed my annual (until now) Valentine’s party, but it was a sweet day with my men. I love how my valentine to the hubs turned out, but the pink lemonade cake I made for dessert last night was a bust – and it was orange instead of pink.

4. We had a snow day baby! It’s been unseasonably warm all winter, but at long last we got a taste of wintery weather complete with a couple inches of snow. That’s a decent amount for around here. (Stop laughing, northerners!) Dash and I had a blast throwing snowballs, making use of the sled, and chasing each other in the white stuff.

5. I’ve been trying my hand at resting. This article helped me a great deal in letting go of a few things. Also see numbers six through ten as to why I might be a bit more tired.

6. Dash. He has been keeping me really busy lately! I adore this son of mine, and the things he does…well I’ll give you a little taste with the rest of my list.

7. First off, he’s decided he is ready to potty train. If you’ve successfully accomplished this feat, mothers, I want you to know that you are all heroes. While it’s all going very well, it has been an experience to say the least. Take tonight when I was trying to juggle fixing dinner and taking him to the bathroom. The noodles boiled over as Dash ran out shaking his wet hands, courtesy of the toilet. Yes. My little helper had turned his potty seat over in an attempt to dump it into the big toilet, giving the entire bathroom a shower in the process.

8. He then decided to wash his hands in the big toilet. For the second time in a week.

9. This was all just minutes after he found the chap stick on my bathroom sink and took a big bite out of it.

10. After about half of the snow had melted yesterday, Dash and I had fun in what was left of the ground cover before it disappeared. I built a snow man, which may have been knocked over by my helper 5 or so times, while said helper splashed the guts out of the mud puddle by the gutter drain. We both came in covered in water and mud. Let me again stress the word covered. Oh the laundry. Hmm…laundry reminds me of another thing I’ve been up to lately, but that would put us at 11 things, and no one wants a list of “11 Things That Have Been Keeping Me Busy Lately.”

My Humble Valentines Efforts

I had bigger plans for Valentines Day than I actually accomplished this year. This is typical of me. Not that I’m necessarily proud of this fact, but as I go through life, I’m working on accepting me for me.

I don’t need an elaborate life full of beautifully intricate details. The key is still doing something. When I realize that I just can’t accomplish all of my plans, take a deep breath and do what I can.

I may have pinned 30 pins full of great ideas on my Valentines Pinterest board, but at the end of the day, I completed three of them. It’s not much, but that’s still 10%. And while my humanity urged me to just give up on all of it since I wouldn’t be able to get it all done, I pushed myself anyway.

If only 10% is going to get done, that 10% will be done with all of my strength. It will be completed with genuine love.

How about you? Are you a perfectionist like me who tries taking on more than is manageable? What list have you made for yourself that is eating at you today? Let me encourage you as an expert in messing up in this area. Let go of the extras and do something from your heart. It doesn’t have to be perfect or jaw-droppingly inspired, but it does need to be done with a sincere heart.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
